Property Division In A Divorce Can Be Complex

If the couple cannot agree to the terms of the equitable division of their property in a divorce or annulment, the Michigan family court may issue a judgment based on equitable distribution.

The court may give either spouse all of the real or personal property that they acquired during their marriage and order the other person to be paid for the equivalent value in cash.

When the court steps in to distribute property, some of the relevant factors it considers include the length of the marriage, the source of the property, each spouse's contribution and the needs of each spouse after the divorce.
