Donna Virkus brings a wealth of experience to her practice of family law. Having gone through a divorce herself, and having two young children at the time, she knows first hand the concerns and anxiety the clients have during the divorce process. She counsels her clients through the process and assists them to achieve their goals and helps to bring the client’s case to resolution. Donna aims to assist her clients to avoid needless escalation of a stressful and difficult situation.
Donna earned her undergraduate degree from Western Michigan University with a major in Industrial Marketing. She has a vast amount of experience in business ranging from managing accounts to starting a new business and making it a successful and thriving company. After her divorce, she decided to make a career change. She went back to college knowing she wanted to earn a graduate degree and she then took steps to enter law school. By achieving a high score on the LSAT she was able to be admitted to Western Michigan Thomas M. Cooley Law school on a scholarship.
While attending law school she worked as a clerk at Oakland County Circuit Court – Family Division, clerking for Judge Edward Sosnick. Being in the courtroom everyday and learning the court process was an invaluable experience. Having hands on experience in family law cases from the beginning of the process through the end resolution with the court, seeing hundreds of attorneys argue cases and how the attorneys and the judges handled the cases sparked her interest in being a family law attorney. It was during this time that Donna decided to concentrate in Litigation at Thomas M. Cooley Law School. Being in moot court allowed her to have experience, while in law school, acting as an attorney. She was on the deans list several times throughout law school and earned a certificate in Litigation.
Upon Judge Sosnick’s retirement Donna worked as a legal assistant at a law firm that exclusively handled family law cases while she completed law school. This experience gave her broader knowledge of handling complex cases from the law firm perspective. While working for the law firm she graduated from law school and passed the Michigan Bar Exam. She continued working at the firm and practicing exclusively family law. Donna decided she wanted to learn other areas of law and expand herself as an attorney, so she moved to a firm that was a general practice firm. This gave her experience handling many types of cases, such as personal injury, bankruptcy, criminal, contract disputes, traffic offenses, and many others, including family law cases. Through this experience she discovered that family law was her area of expertise and that she enjoyed and found it rewarding to assist her clients through the process of divorce.
Donna currently handles the family law cases for the law firm of Serafini, Michalowski, Derkacz and Associates, P.C. She primarily practices in Oakland, Macomb, and Wayne Counties and also handles cases in some of the surrounding counties.
